Top 100 Taxpayers: Nile Breweries Ltd

Nile Breweries Limited is a beverage company. It is one of the largest beer manufacturers in Uganda. It produces and markets Nile Special, Club Pilsener, Eagle Lager, Eagle Extra, Eagle Dark, Nile Gold, Castle Milk Stout, Redd’s, Redd’s Vodka Lemon, Castle Lite, Chairman’s ESB, Chibuku, and Hero. It also imports and distributes Castle Lager and Grolsch. Its parent company acquired Rwenzori Mineral Water in 2010, adding to the breweries stable. Nile Breweries invested $29 million at its Jinja plant to increase capacity in 2009, and opened a second brewery in Mbarara four years later that was expected to double capacity; the plant was constructed at a cost of $91 million.

Nile Breweries was established in Jinja in 1951, and bought by Ugandan Asian entrepreneur Muljibhai Madhvani in 1957. It was taken over by the state in 1972 following the expulsion of Asians by Idi Amin, until 1992 when government divested its stake and the company returned to the Madhvani Group of Companies. South African Breweries Ltd (a subsidiary of SABMiller plc) bought a 40% interest in Nile Breweries in 1997 and later increased it to 60% in 2001.

In 2015 Nile Breweries registered a 20% growth in gross revenue, helped by a 14% increase in volume sales. Its Eagle beer brand – which is responsible for 50% of the company’s beer sales – was the main driver of the 12% increase in beer sales.
