Coffee exports fall 9% year on year in August

Coffee exports in August 2016 rose 8.41% month-on-month but fell 9.22% year-on-year, according to figures from the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. Their value however rose 11.19% month-on-month and declined by 7.66% year-on-year.

A total of 291,059 60-kilo bags of coffee valued at $30.08 million were exported in August 2016, compared to 320,607 bags worth 32,580,374 in the same period last year. In July, 268,490 60-kilo bags of coffee worth $27.06 million were exported.

Coffee is Uganda’s most valuable export, contributing 11.83% to total exports value ($228.76 million) in July 2016.

Most of the coffee exported, 59.79%, was to the European Union. Sudan followed with 21.04%, India with 6.87%, Korea 3.11% and the USA with 2.95%.

For the 12 months to August 2016, 3.39 million bags worth $334 million were exported, versus 3.38 million bags worth $408 million in the same period last year – a 0.29% increase in total volume and 18.14% fall in total value.

Uganda is Africa’s largest coffee exporter and second largest producer after Ethiopia, which consumes most of its coffee.
