Proscovia Nabbanja named UNOC caretaker chief executive

Proscovia Nabbanja has been selected as caretaker chief executive officer at the Uganda National Oil Company, replacing Josephine Wapakabulo, who is resigning.

Ms Wapakabulo’s resignation was announced in May, although she said she would stay on for another three months to allow the company find a replacement. She said she was resigning because she wanted to focus on “family and new opportunities.”

Ms Nabbanja, a geologist, joined the national oil company in November 2016 from the ministry of energy’s Petroleum Directorate, the department charged with promoting petroleum exploration in the country by attracting oil companies to invest in the sector. She has been working as the chief operating officer for upstream at UNOC.

The Uganda National Oil Company is the statutory body mandated to manage the country’s commercial interests in the oil sector. Its mandate includes marketing the country’s share of petroleum received in kind and developing in-depth expertise in the oil and gas industry.

Unoc was incorporated in June 2015, and its body structure put in place later that year, starting with the board of directors. Ms Wapakabulo was appointed as the company’s first chief executive on June 1, 2016.

Ms Nabbanja has a bachelor’s degree in geology and chemistry from Makerere University and a master of science in petroleum geoscience from Imperial College London.

Ms Nabbanja will serve in an interim capacity as the board searches for a substantive chief executive.
