Profile: Anne Juuko, Stanbic Bank’s chief executive

A portrait of Anne Juuko

CEO, Stanbic Bank Uganda Ltd (starts 1 March 2020)

Anne Juuko, who has been named as the next chief executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda, is the first female to lead Uganda’s largest bank and one of its biggest companies.

The appointment of Ms Juuko to replace Patrick Mweheire also marks the second time Stanbic Bank is placing a Ugandan at the helm since it was acquired by South Africa’s Standard Bank in 2002. Before Mr Mweheire, the first Ugandan chief executive, the bank had been led by two Kenyans — Philip Odera and Kitili Mbathi.

But, unlike Patrick Mweheire whose study and work experience prior to his appointment as the head of the bank’s corporate and investment banking division in 2012 and chief executive in 2015 was largely abroad, Ms Juuko is a Ugandan trained banker.

She has a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Makerere University and a master’s degree in strategic planning — taught through distance learning — from Edinburgh Business School, the graduate school of business of Heriot-Watt University in Scotland.

Ms Juuko has been at the Standard Bank Group for eight years since she joined Stanbic Bank Uganda as the head of global markets. In January 2018, she was appointed the head of corporate and investment banking at Standard Bank, Namibia, her most recent role.

Before joining Stanbic Bank, Ms Juuko led the fixed income, currencies, and commodities division at Citibank Uganda Limited. She later moved to Citibank Kenya as the head of customer sales and derivates marketing. She started her banking career in 2001.

“Throughout her career [at Stanbic Bank], Anne has exhibited exemplary performance, winning highly coveted accolades such as the Primary Dealer of the Year award for 6 consecutive years,” a statement by Stanbic Bank Uganda signed by Japheth Katto, the board chair, said.

“She has also demonstrated exceptional leadership and stellar performance that will see her set to achieve Stanbic Bank Uganda’s strategy and vision.”
