MD, British American Tobacco Uganda Limited (since October 2017)

Mathu Kiunjuri was named BAT Uganda’s managing director in October 2017, replacing Dadson Mwaura.  Before his elevation, he was the head of trade marketing and distribution at BAT Uganda. At the time, he had worked with the BAT Group for over 17 years in, mainly in marketing and business strategy roles. He has also held country management roles for BAT’s operations in Ethiopia and Tanzania. Mr Kiunjuri also worked for BAT’s subsidiaries in Kenya and South Africa.

Mr Kiunjuri, a Kenyan national, has an MBA from the United States International University in Nairobi and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton in Eldoret, Kenya.

In 2018, his first full year in charge, BAT Uganda reported a net profit of Shs13.7bn, or Shs280 per share, up 13.8% from the previous year. Revenue rose 2.9% year on year to Shs154bn, markedly slower than the previous year’s growth of 8.2%; the company blamed the low growth on an increase in cigarette prices in response to excise tax increases.

BAT Uganda’s net profit rose 14.1% to Shs15.6bn in 2019, equivalent to Shs320 per share, mainly due to an increase in gross revenue driven by a rebranding of its cigarette products. BATU is a single product company that imports and distributes cigarettes.
