Seacom acquires Africell assets to expand enterprise business

Seacom on Thursday announced that it is acquiring certain infrastructure assets from the defunct telecom operator Africell Uganda Limited.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed in a news release.

The deal will see the broadband group expand its local enterprise services, and ease the integration of its operations in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The assets acquired by Seacom include 760 kilometres of fibre in Kampala and surrounding towns, a 250 square metre data centre, and office space.

Africell exited the Uganda market last October after “a careful assessment of the long-term commercial outlook” for its business.

“By officially establishing ourselves in Uganda through proprietary facilities and resources, we are prioritising widespread connectivity and opening up opportunities to work with businesses in search of quality Internet services,” said Tejpal Bedi, Seacom’s managing director and regional head of sales for the East and North-East Asia region.

Seacom launched operations in Uganda in 2009, offering “wholesale solutions” and started offering “corporate solutions” in 2018, according to the release announcing the deal. It “enjoys a large footprint in Uganda’s financial services sector and works with government and non-governmental organisations, including those in the education, technology and hospitality sectors.”

Based in Mauritius, Seacom is present in five African countries and operates submarine cables, a continent-wide IP multiprotocol label switching network, and fibre optic broadband in several African cities.
