Uganda’s coffee exports increased by 14.9 per cent in September from a year earlier, driven by a good robusta crop harvest in the south western-region, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority said.

The Coffee Authority said exports totalled 577,073 60-kg bags, up from 511,759 bags a year earlier.

Export revenues increased to $94.9mn (Shs355.3bn), a 30.4 per cent rise from the previous year’s figures for the same month. This equated to an average price of $2.73 per kilo, an increase of $0.37 from the previous year.

Robusta coffee exports reached 543,361 bags, accounting for 94.2 per cent of all shipments, and increased by 14.9 per cent compared to the previous year. Robusta earnings amounted to $88.1mn, accounting for 93.3 per cent of total revenue in September, up from 87.7 per cent last year

Arabica volumes reduced by 13.5 per cent from the previous year, while receipts declined by 29.2 per cent.

The Coffee Authority predicted that coffee exports in October will reach 500,000 bags, with exporters tapping into their reserves to fulfil contracts with buyers, particularly since the harvest season has ended in Greater Masaka and the south-western region.
