The partners of MMAKS Advocates, one of Uganda’s most prominent law firms, have appointed Godwin Kakande as a partner.

MMAKS Advocates announced the decision on Tuesday, citing Mr Kakande’s expertise in global and African markets as an outstanding asset to the firm.

Mr Kakande’s practice focuses on corporate and commercial law, including capital markets, oil and gas, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, public private partnerships, insolvency, data protection and privacy, and insurance. He also does a lot of tax work.

His most notable deals include advising Bayport Management, an African consumer finance company, on its flotation on the London Stock Exchange. He also advised the International Finance Corporation on the regulatory framework for a proposed public-private partnership in relation to the construction of a motorway in Kampala, and acted for the Diamond Trust Bank of Kenya in a tax appeal to the Tax Appeals Tribunal against an assessment by the Kenya Revenue Authority, setting a precedent on the applicability of withholding tax on fees charged by foreign banks on nostro accounts.

Mr Kakande is an advocate of the High Court of Uganda and the High Court of Kenya. He is also a member of the New York State Bar. Mr Kakande has been with MMAKS for six years, having previously worked at Anjarwalla & Khanna, Kenya’s largest law firm.

Mr Kakande read law at the University of Pretoria. He also holds a master of laws from the Cornell Law School, Cornell University, New York. He has postgraduate diplomas in law and tax and revenue administration from the Kenya School of Law and the East African School of Taxation respectively.

MMAKS is ranked third in band one, the highest tier, for general business law in Uganda by Chambers and Partners, the international directory. It is also ranked third in the top tier for Uganda by Legal 500. The IFLR1000 rankings, which focus on financial law firms, place MMAKS in the top tier for finance and corporate (third) and project development (fifth).

MMAKS and Anjarwalla are members of the Africa Legal Network, an alliance of commercial law firms operating in fifteen key African jurisdictions.
