Uganda Securities Exchange weekly trade briefing

Bank of Baroda had the highest volume of shares traded, while MTN Uganda had the highest value traded

In the last week of 2023, a total of 271,066 shares of locally listed companies with a total value of Shs12.8mn ($3,385.9) were traded on the Uganda Securities Exchange. This is a decrease from the previous week when 64,385,302 shares worth Shs1.8bn were traded.

Bank of Baroda had the highest volume of shares traded with 195,885 shares, followed by MTN with 46,770 shares, and Airtel with 13,695 shares. Stanbic Holdings Uganda sold 8,000 shares in the week, followed by Uganda Clays Limited with 4,500 shares, National Insurance Corporation with 1,500 shares, and Umeme with 716 shares.

MTN Uganda had the highest trading value, with shares worth Shs7.9mn transacted. Bank of Baroda followed with Shs2.9mn, and Airtel Uganda with Shs1.3mn. Umeme shares had a transaction value of Shs286,400, followed by Stanbic Holdings at Shs256,000, Uganda Clays at Shs58,500, and NIC at Shs9,750.

Three companies saw changes in their share prices during the week. MTN Uganda’s share price closed at Shs170.55, 0.32 per cent higher than its opening price. Airtel’s share price declined by 0.26 per cent to close at Shs93.76, while Stanbic Holdings’ share price fell 1.54 per cent to close at Shs32.

All but four of the locally listed companies traded during the week, which is consistent with last week. British American Tobacco, Cipla Quality Chemical Industries, Dfcu, and New Vision Limited were the counters that did not trade, the same as last week. The exchange was closed on the first two days of the week, which were public holidays.
