Umeme Limited was the most active company with 1,380,600 shares worth Shs552.2mn traded, followed by MTN Uganda with 596,660 shares worth Shs104.2mn

In the first week of 2024, 3,002,860 shares of locally listed companies valued at Shs689.7mn ($181,203) were traded on the Uganda Securities Exchange, up from 271,066 shares valued at Shs12.8mn in the last week of 2023.

The most active company was Umeme Limited, the power utility, with 1,380,600 shares worth Shs552.2mn traded. This was followed by MTN Uganda with 596,660 shares worth Shs104.2mn, and Stanbic Holdings Uganda, the holding company of Uganda’s largest bank, Stanbic Bank, with 1,008,800 shares worth Shs32.3mn. Airtel Uganda sold 10,000 shares worth Shs940, 000, while Uganda Clays Limited sold 6,800 shares worth Shs88, 400 during the week.

At the end of the week, only Airtel and MTN, the two local telecom companies listed on the bourse, recorded changes in their share prices. Airtel’s share price rose 0.26 per cent to close at Shs94, while MTN’s share price dropped 0.32 per cent to close at Shs170.01.

During the week, five out of the eleven locally listed companies traded. The companies that did not trade were British American Tobacco Uganda, Bank of Baroda Uganda, Cipla Quality Chemicals Limited, Dfcu, National Insurance Corporation, and New Vision Limited.
