Volume of trade moved higher, but nominal value fell

Activity on the Uganda Securities Exchange was higher over the week, with more local stocks active than in the previous week and the volume traded increasing, although notional value decreased.

The total volume traded increased to 5,251,248 compared to 3,002,860 last week due to more activity on the Bank of Baroda Uganda counter and more companies trading — eight compared to five the previous week. The value traded was Shs266.2mn compared to Shs689.7mn in the previous week.

All three banking stocks were active. Bank of Baroda led overall trading with 4,231,328 shares sold during the week; the counter saw activity on all days except Monday, with the highest number of shares traded on Tuesday. Electricity distributor Umeme Limited came second with 405,639 shares, followed by Stanbic Holdings Uganda, the holding company of Stanbic Bank, with 390,848 shares. MTN Uganda, Uganda Clays Limited, Airtel Uganda, Dfcu (the holding company of Dfcu Bank), and New Vision Limited sold 134,592, 45,273, 41,604, 1,612, and 352 shares, respectively.

British American Tobacco Uganda, Cipla Quality Chemicals Limited, and National Insurance Corporation were inactive during the week.

Bank of Baroda was active throughout the week, but its share price remained unchanged at Shs15. Similarly, Umeme’s price remained flat at Shs400 despite being active for the entire week. Stanbic’s price increased to Shs32.5 on Monday but fell back to its opening price of Shs32 on Wednesday, closing the week at the same price. The only stocks to end the week at a different price from their opening levels were the two telecom companies. MTN’s stock rose 1.2 per cent to Shs172, while Airtel’s stock dropped by 0.3 per cent to Shs93.71.

Umeme had the highest nominal value of shares traded for the second consecutive week, with Shs162.2mn, followed by Bank of Baroda at Shs63.5mn. MTN Uganda had a trading value of Shs23mn, while Stanbic had Shs12.5mn. Airtel Uganda followed Stanbic at Shs3.9mn, with Uganda Clays at Shs588,549, Dfcu at Shs362,700, and New Vision at Shs53,856.
